Safety First: Why You Should Only Use Certified Shops For EV Repairs

The rise in electric vehicles is great news for the environment and lowering emissions but it’s brought with it an increasing demand for garages that can fix them. And just like their petrol and diesel counterparts they’re not immune to accidents either.

It’s true cars powered by fossil fuels have become significantly more complex over the years, but EV vehicles take this to another level, requiring specialist equipment and parts when they need repairing. Not every garage has this capability but finding a certified repair shop is something you need to look out for if you want a first-class job that lasts. The main risks in electric vehicle repair include:

Risks Due to Lack of Training

Electric vehicle repair requires a specific kind of process and equipment which not all repair shops possess. Technicians must be specially trained to understand, diagnose and handle issues but non-certified repair shops often lack the expertise to handle high-voltage batteries, putting both their staff and your safety at risk.

The quality and safety of repairs carried out by someone lacking specialist training will simply not be as good as someone who has an intimate knowledge of electric vehicles and particularly your make and model.

Lack of Required Equipment

EV repairs absolutely rely on specialist equipment because they’re packed with complex electronics, sensors and high-voltage systems that require manufacturer-specific diagnostic tools to properly assess. A shop without the right equipment may miss hidden damage after a collision or misinterpret fault codes leading to unnecessary repairs or leaving critical issues unresolved.

EV batteries aren’t just high voltage, they’re heavy and require specialist lifting and containment equipment. Shops not equipped to handle these can risk damaging them during repair or worse still cause fires and electric shocks during repair.

Compliance with Manufacturer’s Specifications

When you take your EV to a non-certified garage you immediately risk the repair failing to meet manufacture specifications. EV manufacturers design every component to work within very tight tolerances and certified garages have direct access to these specifications. Non-certified garages don’t which means they often lack the technical know-how to fit them correctly.

This creates a dangerous ripple effect - safety systems may not perform correctly, warranties could be voided, and the vehicle may no longer meet safety and performance standards set by the manufacturer.

In short, only certified repairers can guarantee repairs align with manufacturer specifications, because they work directly with the manufacturer of specific parts for electric vehicles.

Safety and Longevity

Choosing a certified garage is about more than just getting the repairs done. Certified repairers understand the unique construction, technology and safety systems built into your car. They have access to genuine parts, approved repair techniques and the latest software updates to ensure your car is safe now and in years to come.

When uncertified repairers cut corners or make educated guesses, those quick fixes can often lead to premature wear and tear and unexpected breakdowns.
